Over Rice

Have you ever had a mochi donut? It’s been on my list to try for a while, and I finally had the chance to try one from Ellicott City’s first mochi donut shop, Over Rice. This shop has Hawaii-inspired poke and mochi donuts. When I heard that it was opening near one of my favorite boba tea shops (Tea Top), I was excited to go check it out.

WHAT I ORDERED

I visited Over Rice during the early stages, and they were selling out fast! My only options were Matcha and Vanilla since the other flavors were sold out. I actually ended up with the last bunch of matcha donuts and the last Vanilla donut for my sister. Over Rice’s mochi donuts are made fresh daily. Once they were out, they were out (on opening day).

Mochi (pronounced MOE-chee) is a Japanese rice cake that has a chewy texture. It’s made with sticky rice called “mochigome.” Mochi donuts have a beautiful, light texture to them (see photo below). Learn more about mochi here. As for mochi doughnuts, the origin story isn’t clear, but it can be traced back to 1992 in Hawaii where Charmaine Ocasek made “poi mochi.” Read more about mochi doughnuts here.

The matcha mochi donut was as soft as it looked. I loved that the chewy texture complimented the matcha icing nicely. If you’re a matcha person, this donut is for you. I loved this donut so much that I ate two. Yes, they’re that good.

CONCLUSION

Over Rice makes scrumptious mochi donuts. Currently, they offer flavors like Cookies & Cream, Coffee, and Salted Honey Butter. The next time you’re near Ellicott City, check out Over Rice! I’m sure you’ll love it. I can’t wait to go back.
