4 Things I Wish I Had Known Before I Started Blogging

When was the last time you reflected on something you’ve done and enjoyed for years? A couple of years ago, I shared a list of things I’ve learned from blogging. It felt right to take some time to think about things I wish I had known beforehand.

1. The time commitment varies.

I started blogging for a required college course. A lot of time went into researching restaurants and events to check out. The rest of the time was dedicated to writing and choosing photos for assignments. Fast forward to now, and things are different. Social media was starting to become more popular but not necessary when I started. It’s a big part of social media today. Hours are spent researching, analyzing data, writing, rewriting, and photo/video editing. I definitely put more time into it now than I had to do in the beginning. If you want to start a blog, be prepared to put a lot of time into it.

2. Blogging can help you meet new people.

Food is a connector, but I never thought it would connect me to like-minded individuals in cities near and far. Some of my biggest supporters are other bloggers and content creators in different niches, and it’s allowed me to learn a lot about other niches. This experience helps my community grow while also helping me grow.

3. Everyone won’t see the vision.

It can be a hard truth to accept. During the past couple of years, I’ve had to grapple with it. It’s hard to hear people poke at or question what you’re doing. I’ve learned that you cannot expect everyone to understand it. This is not to be confused with supporting you overall.

4. Keep learning.

It’s important to stay in the know about blogging and your niche. A good way to do this is to subscribe to newsletters about social media, marketing, and ones within your niche. For example, if your niche is interior design, Apartment Therapy might be a great one for you. It could also give you ideas for how to write your newsletter if you choose to create one.

CONCLUSION

Blogging is a journey. I started one almost 10 years ago and have learned so much. It can be a fun and rewarding thing to do, whether it’s a job or a hobby. I highly encourage you to start one! If you’re a blogger, what is something that you’ve learned from your journey? Share it in the comments!

Until next time.
