I met my cousin in Washington D.C.’s Petworth neighborhood to finally check out Honeymoon Chicken. It’s been on our lists for a while. We had been so excited in the weeks up to the day of our lunch.
Honeymoon Chicken was founded by Chef Rob Sonderman, who is also the King of BBQ and the creator of Federalist Pig. At Honeymoon Chicken, they brine the chicken for 24 hours. All of their chicken is crispy and tender. There’s even a signature hot honey sauce. Honeymoon Chicken serves fried chicken like no other.

The restaurant is small and has some booth seats and bar stools. It has a bit of a diner meets local neighborhood fave kind of feel to it. There was about a 30-minute wait when we arrived, so our names were added to the waitlist. I think we ended up being seated sooner. Be prepared to wait for seating.
This was my first dining experience where we scanned a QR code and ordered from our phones. You have the option to close your tab or to wait if you have more you want to order. The payment process was a smooth experience.
WHAT I ORDERED
Honeymoon Chicken’s menu includes combos, sandwiches, salads, sides, shares, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), desserts, and kids’ menu items. The chicken served at Honeymoon Chicken is halal. It’s all-natural and cage-free. You have the option to sub blackened chicken for the sandwiches at no extra cost.
Tokyo Tea
I was in the mood for citrus, so I ordered the Tokyo Tea. It’s a cocktail made with rum, tequila, Midori liqueur, triple sec, lime, and soda water. At first impression, I thought this cocktail was beautiful. The bright green color from the Midori liqueur made this pop.

The Tokyo Tea was refreshing. The lime worked so well in this and was exactly what I was looking for. This cocktail had a beautiful sweetness. I wish I ordered a second one.
Honeymoon Chicken Sandwich
I knew before visiting that I wanted a sandwich. I ordered the Honeymoon Chicken Sandwich, which is made with crispy honey-dusted chicken breast, cheddar, cilantro-lime slaw, pickles, Comeback sauce all on a toasted bun.

The chicken is arguably some of the best I’ve had in the area. It was fresh and perfectly crispy. The coleslaw was flavorful and added a nice texture to this sandwich. I have no idea what’s in the Comeback sauce, but it was tasty and worked with the other elements of this fried chicken sandwich.
Sides
Mac & Cheese
Honeymoon Chicken’s Mac & Cheese is made with gruyere, sharp cheddar, and fontina cheese. I don’t get mac and cheese from restaurants often.

This mac was so good. This cheese combo was perfect. I loved the creaminess of this dish. I would order this side again.
Honey Dipped Sprouts
Brussels sprouts are one of my new favorite things to order. I was intrigued when I saw Honey Dipped Sprouts.

These Brussels sprouts were some of the best I’ve ever had. They were browned to perfection. The honey added the perfect touch of sweetness. I saved some to take home just so I could have some the next day, too. I’d absolutely order these again.
Honeymoon Hand Pies
I was so excited to try Honeymoon Chicken’s hand pies. Dessert isn’t something I usually order, but it felt right to do so. The hand pies are house-made, fried, and tossed in sugar. You get 2 pies per order. The selection rotates. This time, apple and cherry were the flavors available.

These pies were scrumptious! Both fillings were flavorful. These hand pies were warm and soft. If you love hand pies, I’m sure you’ll love them.
WRAP-UP
Honeymoon Chicken is worth the hype. The food was fresh and flavorful. Parking was a little tough to find, but it was worth it. I cannot wait to visit again. The next time you’re in Washington, D.C., check out Honeymoon Chicken!
