When your grocery store ice cream favorite finally opens shops near you, you have to check it out! Van Leeuwen, a New York-based ice cream shop, recently opened a few shops in Washington, D.C. I’m glad that I finally got to visit the Adams Morgan location. There are other D.C. locations and one Arlington location as of May 2025.
Van Leeuwen Ice Cream was founded by Ben, Pete, and Laura. The company specializes in French ice cream, which is made with eggs.
The Adams Morgan location was a small, vibrant shop. I loved how playful the decor and design were. The art (below) and wall designs make it a cute spot. It’s a great place to meet up with a friend for a scoop, or grabbing some pints with your family.

WHAT I ORDERED
The menu includes classic and vegan ice cream flavors. From Vanilla Bean to Praline Butter Cake, there’s something for everyone here. I ordered Coffee Affogato and Brown Sugar Cookie Dough Chunk in a cone.
Two-Scoop Ice Cream Cone
The Coffee Affogato flavor was a coffee ice cream swirled with sweet cream ice cream. Brown Sugar Cookie Dough Brownie was brown sugar ice cream mixed with pieces of cookie dough and brownies. (The brown sugar flavor contained gluten, coconut, and soy.)

I loved the flavors I tried so much. I think they paired well together, especially as someone who enjoys brown sugar in coffee. If you love brownies or cookie dough in your ice cream, Brown Sugar Cookie Dough Brownie is for you. As for Coffee Affogato, I think it’s true to the name. Affogato is one of my favorite desserts, and this flavor got it right. As I write this, I’m remembering how much I loved the ice cream and the great first experience I had.
WRAP-UP
Van Leeuwen Ice Cream is a place that has something for everyone, which is always great to see. The staff was also helpful and nice. I had an amazing experience and can’t wait to go back. The next time you’re in Washington, D.C., check out Van Leeuwen Ice Cream!
