Do you know that feeling when you just want to try something new? I’ve been on a mission to find new coffee shops to try and have added a bunch to my list. The one that surprised me the most was Proteus Brews.

Proteus Brews is the coffee side of Proteus Bicycles, a popular bike shop in College Park, MD. This woman-owned shop has won awards and recognitions like Hyattsville Wire’s Best of Route 1 (2018, 2019, 2020) Best Bike Shop; and the Washington Area Bicyclists Association (WABA) Bicyclists Choice Awards’ Best Bike Shop (2016, 2017).

WHAT I ORDERED

Proteus Brews offers batch-brewed coffee, single-cup pour-over coffee, espresso-based drinks, tea, milk tea, milk drinks, and specials. I also love that so many of the other items they offer are from local businesses. Their scones, cookies, and brownies are from Shortcake Bakery in Hyattsville, MD. The croissants, danishes, and sticky buns are from Hawthorne Fine Breakfast Pastry in Severna Park, MD. They also sell whole beans from Open Seas Coffee, a coffee company based in Stevensville, MD.

I love that Proteus Brews had drinks that were suggested or created by their baristas on a special menu. I was in the mood to try one, so I ordered the Caramel Cold Brew. I’m not sure how often this menu changes, but you have the option to add caramel and other add-ins to your cold brew. The other options are vanilla, hazelnut, strawberry, and lavender. Proteus Brews’ cold brew is brewed in-house using Open Seas Coffee’s Neptune’s Folly Blend. Then it’s poured over ice. Cold brew is great if you want coffee with low acidity.

I enjoyed this Caramel Cold Brew. The caramel flavor stood out without overpowering the coffee. This cold brew had a finish just as silky as they said it would. I’d absolutely order this again!

CONCLUSION

Proteus Brews is great for a quick stop to get some solid coffee. It was surprising to see coffee sold in a bicycle shop. It’s something I had never thought existed. I’m glad I checked it out and can’t wait to visit again. The next time you’re in College Park, MD, check it out!
