Uncle C’s Chicken & Waffles

Chicken & Waffles is one of the best dishes you’ll ever have. There’s nothing like a solid sweet and savory combination. Each one I’ve had reminds me how much of a staple this has become. I tried it for the first time at Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles and haven’t looked back.

My mom sent me an Instagram Reel about Uncle C’s Chicken & Waffles, a shop located in Alexandria, VA. It was founded by Afghan Americans, Sayed Qayum and Sam Bahary. “Uncle C” is a nickname for Qayum based on the Pashto pronunciation of his name. He has roots in Southern cooking and creates new concepts, and you can see it when you look at the menu. “Where sweet meets savory,” its tagline, is a great way to describe this shop. Learn more about how Uncle C’s got started in the Washington Post’s article about the restaurant here.

WHAT I ORDERED

The menu includes other options like signature sandwiches, breakfast platters and sandwiches, fried chicken, seafood, salad, wraps, drinks, and desserts. The chicken at Uncle C’s is halal.

I went to Uncle C’s Chicken & Waffles knowing that I had to get the chicken & waffles. When I got there, I decided to order a sandwich to try the next day for lunch. You have the option to order in person or online.

Chicken & Waffles

The Chicken & Waffles menu item has multiple variations and amount options. You can choose chicken wings, chicken tenders, or dark-meat chicken. You can order as little as a three-piece chicken and 1 waffle combo and as much as a 15-piece chicken and three waffles. You can add more waffles for a few more dollars or so. My mom ordered the 15-piece chicken tender with 5 waffles, which was enough for four of my family members to share for dinner.

The waffle had the ideal texture. I loved that the fried chicken tenders were well-seasoned. The maple syrup was like the cherry on top–the perfect sweet and savory combo. I’d absolutely order this again. If you love chicken & waffles, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this.

The Atlanta

I was so excited to try the Atlanta for lunch the next day. It has a juicy chicken breast that’s hand-breaded and fried. My favorite part? It’s smothered in honey butter and topped with cheddar cheese on a brioche bun. I think brioche buns are the best bread for almost any sandwich.

Listen…the Atlanta is the sandwich you need from here. Yes, need. The chicken was beautifully cooked and was perfectly crispy. The cheddar cheese was great on this. The sweetness of the honey butter and the brioche bun helped make this a solid savory and sweet sandwich. If you love chicken sandwiches, this is the one on Uncle C’s menu you need to try.

CONCLUSION

Shout out to my mom for sharing this place with me and trying it with me. My family loved the chicken & waffles so much, and that’s big considering we’re an opinionated bunch. The food was ready a lot faster than I expected considering how busy it was. The staff was also nice and helpful. I’ve visited Uncle C’s Chicken & Waffles another time since the first visit, and the Atlanta was just as good as the first time I tried it.

The next time you’re in or near Alexandria, VA, check out Uncle C’s Chicken & Waffles! I’m sure you’ll love it.
