Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream

What’s your favorite treat to enjoy when the weather’s warm? My personal favorite is ice cream. I’ve been on a mission to find and try new (to me) ice cream shops in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area. One of the ones that piqued my interest was Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream.

Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream makes small-batch, all-natural ice cream with local ingredients (when possible). It’s owned by mother-daughter duo, Sarah and Annie Park. I love that they’re committed to using high-quality ingredients. All products are made in-house in Bethesda, MD. Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream was Best of Bethesda’s 2022 Best Solution for Indecisive Ice Cream Eaters. In addition to their classic flavors, seasonal flavors are available and regularly rotated. Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream also has vegan and sorbet flavors. The classics include Blueberry Swirl, Coffee Oreo, and Simply Vanilla Bean.

As for the ambiance, the ice cream shop is small but inviting. There’s a fun, whimsical vibe here that I enjoyed.

Important info:

Both locations are wheelchair-accessible. Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream can also give assistance over the phone. If you order online, the staff can bring your order to your vehicle.

WHAT I ORDERED

I visited Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream in the spring, so the flavors I ordered may not be available. The Summer 2023 flavors include Strawberry Lemonade Sorbet, Honeydew Sorbet, Rose Pistachio, and Summer Peach Melba. Sarah’s has single-scoop and double scoop, ice cream flights, pints of ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes, floats, and ice cream sandwiches. All flavors are made with local milk, and all-natural ingredients in tiny batches on-site. I ordered a double scoop cone with Cherry Blossom Festival (spring flavor) and Chai Tea-ramisu.

Cherry Blossom Festival (Season)

Cherry Blossom Festival was made with organic dark cherries and a hint of rosewater. A pinch of beet powder was used to get the ice cream this color. This was the cherry-est ice cream I’ve ever had! I loved that the cherry flavor was just right. The cherries were so fresh. The hint of rosewater was the perfect touch. I loved how creamy this flavor was.

Chai Tea-ramisu

I was really excited to try Chai Tea-ramisu. This flavor was made with chai-spiced ice cream, mascarpone, and lady fingers. The chai spices were strong in a good way. Mascarpone is an ingredient that works so well in ice cream. (Mascarpone is a soft Italian cream cheese.) If you haven’t tried an ice cream flavor with it as an ingredient, you should. This was my first time trying it in a flavor without fruit, and it worked so well. I hadn’t known that I needed a chai version of tiramisu until this day.

CONCLUSION

I had a great experience at Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream. The staff was amazing and helpful. The range of ice cream flavors was solid. The next time you’re in the mood for ice cream, check out Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream!
