Gelato shops and coffee shops are great, but why not have both in one place? La Gelatteria, a Black-owned shop in Kensington, is this. Even better? They have intriguing flavors like Mojito and traditional flavors like Stracciatella.

While looking for the place, I didn’t realize that I passed a small parking lot that’s right by the door. Otherwise, you may have to park on the grass on the upper level. Walking down the stairs to get to the shop, I was surprised that it opened up so much. They even have a cute photo opp spot.

Note: The front of the store is wheelchair accessible on the Knowles Ave. side. There are parking spaces in front of the store parking spaces on Knowles Ave side.

WHAT I ORDERED

Gelato: 3 Flavors

There were so many flavors to choose from, so I narrowed it down to flavors that I thought would work well together: Lychee, Mojito, and Passionfruit.

Passionfruit, Mojito, and Lychee gelato

Overall, these flavors were refreshing and not overly sweet. Mojito tasted just like the drink sans alcohol. Passionfruit tasted just like the actual fruit. Out of all of the flavors, Lychee was my absolute favorite. It was beautifully sweet. I loved how light this dessert was and wish I could’ve taken more home.

Matcha Affogato

I saw the matcha affogato on La Gelatteria’s menu at the last minute, and I’m so glad I got it. Traditionally, an affogato is made with espresso, and the name itself basically means “drowned” in espresso. I love that this matcha affogato was a simple twist on a traditional dessert.

The matcha paired well with the gelato. You can taste both flavors without either one of them being overpowering. You can’t go wrong with the matcha and vanilla flavor combo, and this is no different. For my matcha lovers, this is the dessert for you!

CONCLUSION

If you love gelato, matcha, or both, La Gelatteria is the place for you. It’s a great open space that has a cute photo opp spot (below), and the desserts are amazing. I haven’t tried the coffee, but they have a fall menu that looks amazing. (I’m eyeing the Maple Bourbon Latte). The next time you’re in or near Kensington, MD, check it out!

Until next time.
